Legacies, the spin-off series of The Vampire Diaries, has been canceled by The CW after four seasons, marking the end of the paranormal YA franchise's thirteen-year run on television. The show first premiered in October 2015, continuing the story from The Originals, another spin-off series that aired from October 2013 to August 2018.

Legacies revolves around the life of Hope Mikaelson, portrayed by Danielle Rose Russell, who is the daughter of vampire/werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson and werewolf Hayley Marshall. Hope attends the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted in Mystic Falls, Virginia, where she learns to control her supernatural powers. Alongside navigating her hybrid heritage of vampire, werewolf, and witch, she also faces numerous threats and adversaries. The series has also seen the return of familiar characters from The Vampire Diaries, including Alaric Saltzman and Jeremy Gilbert.

News of Legacies' cancellation comes from The CW Network, which has confirmed that Season 4 will be the show's last. This decision effectively ends the 13-year run of the Vampire Diaries franchise on television, as no new spin-offs have been announced. Since the first season of The Vampire Diaries aired, the franchise has continuously maintained a presence on television. After the original series concluded in 2017, The Originals took its place in October 2013, running alongside season 5. Following the conclusion of The Originals in 2018, Legacies began its run in the following October, ensuring the franchise's consistent presence year after year.

Before the cancellation news, Legacies Season 4 had already seen significant changes with the departure of Kaylee Bryant, who portrayed the character Josie Saltzman, a self-conscious witch and fellow student at the Salvatore School. Josie's final appearance took place in Episode 9 of Season 4 as she bid farewell to her girlfriend Finch Tarrayo and her sister Lizzie. The unexpected twist was already a difficult pill to swallow, but now viewers will sadly have to say goodbye to the rest of the characters as well.

Out of all the recent cancellations by The CW, the end of Legacies may have the most impact, as it brings the network's long-running franchise to an uncertain close. Although franchise creator Julie Plec has plans for another vampire-centric series called Vampire Academy, the end of The Vampire Diaries' reign on television will undoubtedly leave a void for many fans. With the Season 4 finale of Legacies approaching, fans will be eagerly awaiting to see if it can deliver a satisfying conclusion to the beloved franchise.
