Mariska Hargitay Unveils 'Flawless' Family with 'Law & Order' Co-star & Kids Who Act as Her 'Instructors'

Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann, co-stars on the hit show "Law and Order SVU," have a love story that is truly one of a kind. Their romance blossomed off-screen, and they have been happily married for over 18 years.

As they listened to the sermon, Hargitay felt an overwhelming connection with Hermann. She couldn't help but burst into tears right in the middle of their date. Hermann, thinking that she was moved by the service, was surprised when Hargitay revealed the real reason behind her tears. She knew in that moment that he was the one for her. Reflecting on that experience, Hargitay said, "I cried because I was feeling something that I'd never felt before, but I kind of knew what it was. When you're a little girl, your parents and your grandparents and everyone goes, 'When you're in love, you'll know.' And I did." Their love story was uniquely New York, as Hermann fondly remembered. Despite this unusual encounter, their relationship continued to grow. In 2004, Hargitay and Hermann tied the knot at the Unitarian Historical Chapel in Santa Barbara.

They were determined to have a big family, and Hargitay even expressed her willingness to adopt. Their first attempt at adoption fell through, but their lawyer eventually connected them with another expectant mother. Through a video call, Hargitay and Hermann met their daughter, Amaya, for the first time. It was a truly profound moment when Hargitay helped deliver her baby girl. Not long after, they welcomed their second son, Andrew, into their family. Although they hadn't planned on adopting again, they couldn't resist when the opportunity came. Andrew became their son, and their family was complete. Hargitay and Hermann's love story is a testament to the power of connection and the journey of building a family. They have found love and happiness both on and off the screen, and their bond only continues to grow stronger.
